Insights From Chan
Fist of all, this guy in insightful, inspirational and an amazinf man of faith and vision. HOWEVER, very hard to take notes from. So, here's some insights and thoughts I've captured.
1. We need to long for the supernatural. We need an Acts 2 move of God. Are we experiencing this kind og power? People speaking in unknown tongues and then seeing their community transformed?
2. Think about the the parable of the farmer planting the seed in the different locations. Good fruit come from the good soil.
We need to work in the good soil.
Question: Why would a farmer spend all day working in the rocks when he can plant in the good soil? Are we spending time in the right areas? Do we have church and teaching like this? Or do we just work in all the areas of seed planting?
3. A gang guy comitted his life to Jesus and got baptized...but then eventually left the church.
Why? because he thought church would be like a gang...like a family....supporting each other all the time. He didn’t think it would just be a Sunday to Sunday meeting of prople.
POINT: Gangs are a better picture of the Church of Jesus than the American church. We gotta get there.
4. The American church is like a table of blackjack players. Everyone asks how THEIR relationship with the “Dealer” is. It's all about their hand. It’s an individual thing. A lot of people at the table, but everyone just concerned about themselves.
5. Ask these two important questions?
What are we doing that is Biblical?
What are we doing that is just American?
6. Will you hear this from God at the end? WELL. DONE.

I guess I missed the part in the Gospels where Jesus and the disciples hung out in front of the temple selling drugs to the kids leaving their Torah class. Or I guess I just quickly passed over the part where Peter, on the back of a camel, trotted through a residential area chopping up everyone in his path.
That statement is preposterous. Perhaps, there is a fellowship or community among gang members, but that is in no way a reflection of Jesus Christ or the Church of America or any other nation. Next thing you're going to say is that there is a certain kind of love that a pedophile sees in a young child that the American church lacks.
The bond that is formed in a gang is nothing like that formed by those in communion with the living God. To suggest that this bond of mutual necessity is any way a reflection of the loving nature of the Christian community shows a lack of understanding of the mosic basic tenets of the faith.

William,
He just made a point that many churches lack community, unlike gangs. Nothing more. Doctrine, faith, and truth was not part of this discussion.
Anyone else have thoughts?
Though I purposefully slept in this morning, I see both Chan's point as well as WK's. The church SEVERLY lacks genuine community, at least on some levels; but the gangs are not a LOVING community like the people of God should be (they kill, sell drugs, beat people for admission, etc.). There are several of the top 10 (Commandments that is) being broken by this "community."
Of course, Donald Miller tonight called God a pusher of drugs...so made for an interesting day?!

Travis:
I thought his gang comment (yes, I was there) was right on.
We, as a christian community, should be the ones showing how to do mmunity ...
YET, WE FAIL. We do not do what we should be doing.
